I am an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion. I bring Holy Communion to my local hospital.

I am occasionally asked (by either parents or the patient themselves) to give a blessing. In my "Catholic Household Blessings and Prayers" (Revised Edition, c. Aug 2007), there is a sub-chapter titled "Prayers during Sickness or Infirmity." It starts, "In times of serious illness, a priest, deacon or lay minister will come to visit and bless the sick and bring Holy Communion..." The blessing ends with the instructions, "The leader may wish to make the sign of the cross on the sick person's forehead while saying the prayer." The "Book of Blessings" is cited as the source for this.

May I give this blessing?

Tracy

This may sound flip, but as a mother of three (all too young to receive), I am always willing to take ANY blessing that ANYone is handing out, especially by that point in Mass!

Anyone can bless a child.
